Kyrgyzstan’s political situation has shifted as the Speaker of Parliament stepped down from his post.
Speaker of the Jogorku Kenesh (parliament) Nurlanbek Turgunbek uulu announced his resignation on February 12 during a parliamentary session. Despite leaving the position of speaker, he will retain his seat as a member of parliament, The Caspian Post reports via Russian media.
Turgunbek uulu said his decision was linked to personnel changes initiated by President Sadyr Japarov, though he did not elaborate on further reasons.
“I have never worked for one or two individuals; I have always worked in the interests of the country and the Kyrgyz people. During this time, I contributed to the adoption of important and necessary decisions. I will continue working as a deputy. We must learn to work without intrigue to preserve political stability,” he stated.
Turgunbek uulu had served as speaker since 2022 and was re-elected to the post following the early parliamentary elections in 2025.
MP Marlen Mamataliyev has been nominated as a candidate for the speaker’s position. Preliminary information suggests that no alternative candidates are expected.
