Kazakh Senate Reviews Deals with Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia

Kazakhstan’s upper house of Parliament is preparing for a key morning session that could reshape the country’s regional and trade ties.

The Kazakh Senate is set to convene at 9:30 a.m. (GMT+5) to consider the ratification of several major international agreements with Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.

One of the central items on the agenda is the ratification of a July 4, 2006 agreement concerning the settlement of Kazakhstan’s property rights to resort and recreational facilities located in the Issyk-Kul region of Kyrgyzstan. Lawmakers will also review a second draft ratification tied to a December 1, 2009 agreement on the lease of land plots in the Issyk-Kul district, along with related amendment protocols.

Beyond bilateral issues, senators are expected to examine the ratification of the interim trade agreement between the Eurasian Economic Union and Mongolia. The deal envisages the removal of import customs duties on 367 categories of goods in mutual trade, potentially opening new opportunities for exporters and businesses.

The agreement is designed to remain in force for three years, with the possibility of automatic extension for another three-year term. In addition to tariff reductions, it addresses technical, sanitary and phytosanitary standards, customs cooperation, and mechanisms to protect domestic markets.
