The delegation of Kyrgyzstan headed by Minister of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision Meder Mashiev is taking part in the International High-Level Conference on Glacier Conservation.
According to the information of the ministry, the conference is being held from May 29 to 31 in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, The Caspian Post reports, citing Kyrgyz media.
The conference aims to raise global awareness of the critical role of glaciers, find sustainable solutions to protect them, and develop coordinated actions in the context of the growing climate crisis.
Meder Mashiev took part in a thematic session of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations on Thursday.
Speaking at the opening of the session, the minister emphasized that the rapid melting of glaciers threatens water security, agriculture, and the sustainability of entire communities. This is not only a regional but also a global challenge. The retreat of glaciers disrupts the ecological balance, threatens biodiversity, and hinders the sustainable development of mountainous areas.
On the same day, Mashiev took part in a ministerial dialogue on climate resilience, glacier conservation, and water cooperation, which was also attended by the ministers of environmental protection of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan, the head of the Green Climate Fund, and other distinguished guests.
The Kyrgyz minister also noted that glaciers are not only unique natural formations, but also vital sources of fresh water, providing irrigation, hydropower and water supply for millions of people in Central Asia. Their importance is especially increasing against the backdrop of increasing droughts and climate fluctuations.
In addition, within the framework of the conference, a number of bilateral meetings were held between Minister Meder Mashiev and Director of the Green Climate Fund Mafalda Duarte, as well as with Chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of Tajikistan Sheralizoda Bakhodur.
