The Kyrgyz Cabinet of Ministers and Kyrgyzstan Reclaim Co. Ltd. have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to build a cascade of small hydropower plants on the Tar River in the Kara-Kulja district of the Osh region.
The agreement was signed on January 23 by Deputy Minister of Energy Altynbek Rysbekov and Qiu Chenqi, General Director of Kyrgyzstan Reclaim Co. Ltd., The Caspian Post reports via Kyrgyz media.
The project envisions a total installed capacity of 200 megawatts, with $300 million in investment allocated for construction. Once completed, the hydropower cascade is expected to significantly expand Kyrgyzstan’s electricity generation capacity and enhance the country’s long-term energy security.
Officials say the initiative is aimed at strengthening the sustainability of Kyrgyzstan’s energy system while supporting stable and environmentally responsible development of the national power sector.
The project comes amid broader regional efforts to expand renewable energy. Earlier, Tajikistan’s Deputy Minister of Energy and Water Resources Manuchehr Safarzoda held discussions with representatives of the UAE-based Masdar on the construction of a 400 MW solar power plant in Tajikistan, underscoring Central Asia’s growing focus on clean energy investments.
