The governments of Switzerland and Kyrgyzstan have signed an agreement to launch the Water Use Permit System project.
Switzerland will provide 2.2 million Swiss francs (over $2.7 million) to support the initiative, which aims to promote sustainable and efficient water use across the country, The Caspian Post reports via Kyrgyz media.
The project is fully aligned with Kyrgyzstan’s recently adopted Water Code, which identifies the permit system as a key tool for regulating water resources.
Under the initiative, water management authorities will be able to set mandatory standards, ensure compliance, and improve water accounting, strengthening the country’s overall water governance framework.
The project is set to run from 2025 to 2028, marking a major step in Kyrgyzstan’s efforts to modernize water management and boost environmental sustainability.
