Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed willingness to resign once the conflict with Russia concludes.
Zelenskyy made clear that if peace is achieved, he does not plan to run in future presidential elections and promised to urge Ukraine’s parliament to organize elections upon the establishment of a ceasefire, The Caspian Post informs via Russian media.
“If we end the war with the Russians, yes, I’m ready not to run [in the elections]. That was never my goal. During this difficult time, I wanted to be with my country, to help my country. Yes, that’s what I have always wanted. My goal is to end the war,” Zelenskyy said.
The president also emphasized Ukraine’s responsible use of long-range weapons supplied by the US, highlighting that Ukrainians “are not terrorists and are not targeting civilians.”
Acknowledging the anger directed at Ukraine, Zelenskyy explained it is understandable given that Russia started the war and is responsible for civilian casualties.
“All our people understand that we don’t need to attack civilians,” he said, responding to Russian strikes on Ukrainian territory.
In a pointed warning, Zelenskyy hinted at the possibility of strikes on Moscow, advising “Kremlin workers” to locate the nearest bomb shelters.
“First and foremost, they need to know where the bomb shelters are. If they don’t stop the war, they will need them anyway,” the Ukrainian leader cautioned.
