Armenia–Türkiye Border Checkpoint Enters Final Countdown

Preparation at the Alican customs checkpoint (on the Armenian side, the Margara checkpoint - ed.), which is expected to become one of the key bridges in the process of normalizing relations between Türkiye and Armenia, has accelerated.

The governor of Iğdır, Fırat Taşolar, personally inspected the ongoing reconstruction and modernization work at the border crossing and was briefed on the current state of affairs, The Caspian Post reports, citing Turkish media.

The Alican customs checkpoint, closed for civilian crossings since 1993 but temporarily opened for the delivery of aid to those affected by the earthquake, is now being actively prepared for permanent operation. Governor Taşolar, along with a technical team, inspected the buildings along the border line and the crossing routes. During the inspection, he noted that the work is expected to be completed in a short period of time.

The opening of the Alican customs checkpoint is not only a diplomatic step but also a significant "breath of fresh air" for the region's economy. It is expected that the activation of the checkpoint will lead to the revival of cross-border trade and an increase in commercial activity in Iğdır and the surrounding provinces. Additionally, it will create logistical advantages by reducing the length of transport routes through the Caucasus and contribute to the development of regional tourism thanks to mutual travel between the two countries.
