While no official details were provided, videos and photos flooded social media, showing bright flashes in the night sky, smoke rising over the city, and residents rushing for cover.
Russian officials moved quickly to reassure the public, claiming “all drones were intercepted” by air defense systems. However, multiple explosions and smoke plumes were reported across several districts, with local Telegram channels suggesting that a high-rise building may have been hit.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin confirmed that air defenses were “repelling drone attacks,” but did not comment on reports of visible damage in central Moscow.
Images circulating online appeared to show armed soldiers deployed near the Kremlin, pointing to heightened security measures in the city. Analysts have also speculated that some explosions could have resulted from Russian air defenses misfiring, a problem seen in previous incidents.
Earlier that same day, explosions were reported near key military installations, including Shaikovka Airbase and Kaluga Airport, both used by Russia’s strategic aviation units. In a separate development, Ukrainian forces reportedly struck the Belgorod dam, causing flooding that cut off Russian troops near the Vovchansk front line.
