Türkiye is emerging as an increasingly influential member of NATO as European countries seek to strengthen their own defense capabilities and reduce reliance on US military support.
Ankara's growing importance within the alliance is being driven by the rapid expansion of its domestic defense industry and rising arms exports, The Caspian Post reports via Bloomberg.
Turkish defense companies now supply NATO allies with a broad range of military equipment, including drones, armored vehicles, naval vessels, trainer aircraft, and electronic warfare systems.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan plans to use the upcoming NATO summit to reinforce Türkiye's position within the alliance. Ankara is expected to push for a more balanced distribution of defense spending among allies and seek the removal of restrictions affecting trade in defense-related products.
The report notes that 56% of Türkiye's defense exports in 2024 were shipped to the United States, European countries, and other NATO allies. Since 2020, overseas sales by Türkiye's defense industry have reportedly quadrupled, reaching approximately $10 billion annually.
Türkiye's expanding role comes as European governments reassess their security strategies amid a reduced US military presence in the region and the continuing war in Ukraine, increasing the importance of stronger defense cooperation within NATO.
