Russian President Vladimir Putin will pay a state visit to Tajikistan in October 2025, marking a key moment in deepening Russian-Tajik cooperation.
This will be President Putin’s first visit to Dushanbe since June 2022, when he made a working trip focused on bilateral ties and regional security, including developments in Afghanistan, The Caspian Post reports, citing Tajik media.
The upcoming visit is expected to include extensive discussions with President Emomali Rahmon on strengthening the strategic partnership and alliance between the two countries. Talks will likely highlight cooperation in trade, investment, security, and humanitarian affairs. During Rahmon’s official visit to Moscow in March 2025, both leaders signed several new cooperation agreements reflecting their shared commitment to expanding bilateral ties.
President Putin will also participate in two major regional summits in Dushanbe:
The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Heads of State Summit, where Tajikistan currently holds the rotating chairmanship after taking over from Russia on January 1, 2025.
The “Central Asia-Russia” Summit, following the inaugural summit held in Astana in 2022, which celebrated 30 years of diplomatic relations between Russia and the Central Asian republics.
Russia remains one of Tajikistan’s most important strategic and economic partners. The two nations are bound by foundational treaties signed in 1993 and 2005, and collaborate actively within multilateral platforms such as the CIS, CSTO, and SCO.
According to official data, bilateral trade between Russia and Tajikistan reached approximately $900 million in the first five months of 2025-an increase of 9.3 per cent over the same period in 2024. Russian exports accounted for $858 million, while Tajik exports to Russia totaled $42 million.
Russia is also one of the largest investors in Tajikistan, with cumulative investment approaching $2 billion, surpassed only by China. In addition, up to 2 million Tajik citizens are estimated to live and work in Russia, contributing significantly to Tajikistan’s economy through remittances.
