Soil Erosion After Heavy Rains Causes Tajik Train Accident

Authorities have linked a railway accident in Tajikistan’s Khatlon region to persistent heavy rains and soil erosion.

A fuel-carrying locomotive derailed and overturned in the Yovon district after the ground beneath the railway tracks weakened, The Caspian Post reports via Tajik media.

According to the railway operator, soil displacement caused the train to deviate from its trajectory, leading to the locomotive and a wagon leaving the tracks, overturning and catching fire.

Railway officials said a team of specialists was dispatched to the scene immediately after the incident was reported. Cleanup and repair work is currently underway, and rail traffic is gradually being restored. No injuries were reported.

Representatives of Tajik Railways noted that similar incidents have occurred before and stressed that the most important outcome was the absence of casualties. At the same time, the accident will be thoroughly investigated, and any identified shortcomings will be addressed, the company added.
