President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon has met with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) President Akihiko Tanaka on the sidelines of the “Central Asia plus Japan” Dialogue Summit in Tokyo, reaffirming the strong partnership between Tajikistan and Japan in advancing sustainable development.
During the meeting, President Rahmon praised JICA for its long-standing contribution to Tajikistan’s social and economic progress, The Caspian Post reports via Tajik media.
Both sides emphasized the importance of enhancing regional connectivity and promoting a green economy amid current regional and global challenges, identifying these areas as key priorities for future cooperation.
Earlier, on December 10, Japan and Tajikistan signed an Exchange of Notes paving the way for two Japanese Grant Aid projects. The agreements were signed by Japan’s Ambassador to Tajikistan Keiko Furuta and Tajik Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin. A formal signing ceremony later took place at the Ministry of Finance in Dushanbe with the participation of senior officials from both countries and JICA representatives.
One project, valued at 1.3 billion Japanese yen (about $8.6 million), focuses on improving freight-scanning equipment at the Spitamen customs point along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route. The initiative aims to boost connectivity, strengthen economic security, and enhance the efficiency and transparency of public administration.
The second project supports the detailed design of a new 220 kV transmission substation in Dushanbe, with a grant of 41 million Japanese yen (around $260,000). The project is expected to improve the reliability of electricity supply in the capital, with further construction planned after the design phase is completed.
Both initiatives align with Tajikistan’s National Development Strategy through 2030, contributing to economic growth, increased transit capacity, and a more stable power supply. JICA reaffirmed its commitment to continuing close cooperation with the Government of Japan to support Tajikistan’s long-term development goals.
Japan and JICA have partnered with Tajikistan since 1993. As of December 2025, more than 2,600 people have participated in JICA’s knowledge and training programs, while the agency’s cumulative portfolio in the country exceeds 47.1 billion Japanese yen across 60 projects, underscoring Japan’s enduring commitment to sustainable development and improved living standards in Tajikistan.
