The Agency on Statistics under the President of Tajikistan has announced that bilateral trade turnover between Tajikistan and Afghanistan reached approximately $40 million in the first five months of this year, reflecting a 31.1 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2024.
Of the total trade volume, about $32 million-or 80 per cent-was comprised of Tajik exports to Afghanistan. Imports from Afghanistan accounted for nearly $8 million, The Caspian Post reports, citing Tajik media.
Electricity continues to be Tajikistan’s primary export to Afghanistan. Other key exports include cement, coal, mineral fertilizers, and food products in smaller quantities.
In return, Tajikistan imports a range of agricultural goods from Afghanistan, notably figs, raisins, and cotton. Afghan exports also include carpets and precious and semi-precious stones, contributing to a growing presence in the Tajik market.
Afghanistan remains among the top ten destinations for Tajik exports, behind countries such as the Netherlands, China, Türkiye, Uzbekistan, Iran, Russia, and Kazakhstan.
Between January and May 2025, Tajikistan conducted trade with 107 countries, with total foreign trade turnover reaching nearly $3.9 billion, up 2.8 per cent year-on-year.
The country exported $780 million worth of goods-a decline of 11.3 per cent compared to the same period in 2024. Imports, however, increased by 7 per cent, totaling more than $3.1 billion.
Russia, China, and Kazakhstan continue to be Tajikistan’s leading trade partners.
