Tajikistan Showcases Contemporary Art at the First-Ever Astana Art Fair

Tajikistan has taken part in the inaugural Astana Art Fair, a major international contemporary art exhibition held in the capital of Kazakhstan.

Representing the country were art manager Nasiba Karimova and artist Bahrom Ismatov, who presented their works under the theme “Roots of the Future.” Hosted at the Congress Center in Astana, the event gathered over 200 artists, curators, and art historians from around the world, The Caspian Post reports via Tajik media.

Karimova, curator of the Tajik Art Gallery, said that Ismatov displayed nine paintings blending traditional Tajik motifs with modern artistic techniques - a combination that drew strong praise from visitors and art experts alike.

“He is developing a unique texture and style that caught the attention of many experts,” Karimova said. One of Ismatov’s paintings was sold for $900, reflecting growing interest in Central Asian contemporary art.

The fair also became a hub for dialogue and collaboration, as artists and curators exchanged ideas about emerging art trends in Central Asia. Karimova said that artwork prices ranged from $1,000 and up, with local collectors showing increasing enthusiasm for regional artists.

Karimova expressed gratitude to Tajikistan’s Ambassador to Kazakhstan, Khairullo Ibodzoda, and to the fair’s organizing team Urpaq and creative director Aizhan Kurmangaliyeva for their support.

The Astana Art Fair marks an exciting new addition to the regional cultural calendar, featuring participants from Türkiye, Russia, China, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Switzerland, and Dubai - a vibrant showcase of creativity and cross-cultural connection.
