On the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Turkmenistan’s Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov has held a series of high-level meetings with senior UN representatives, focusing on strengthening Turkmenistan’s collaboration with the United Nations and advancing key global initiatives.
In his first meeting, Meredov discussed Turkmenistan’s cooperation with the UN and its specialized agencies, highlighting progress and follow-up actions stemming from the Third UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDC3), The Caspian Post reports via Turkmen media.
The conference, held earlier this year in Avaza, Turkmenistan, produced two critical outcome documents: the Avaza Political Declaration and the Avaza Programme of Action for 2024-2034.
Both parties reviewed practical measures to implement these documents, emphasizing joint efforts to promote sustainable development. Turkmenistan reaffirmed its commitment to championing the conference’s initiatives and expressed readiness to organize collaborative events to support the global development agenda.
In a second meeting, Minister Meredov conferred with UN Deputy Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, focusing on Turkmenistan’s engagement in peacekeeping and international security. Discussions underscored the importance of preventive diplomacy, the role of the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, and enhancing regional cooperation frameworks.
The talks also highlighted Turkmenistan’s efforts to build mutual trust among nations, especially through its proclamation of 2025 as the International Year of Peace and Trust. This initiative aligns with the 80th General Assembly’s agenda item, “Neutrality for Peace and Security,” which includes draft resolutions on neutrality’s role in global peace and the proposed establishment of an International Day of Mediation.
The meetings concluded with exchanges on a broad range of regional and international challenges, reflecting a shared commitment to peace, stability, and sustainable development.
