Uzbekistan has hosted the inaugural meeting of special representatives of Central Asian countries on Afghanistan, bringing together officials from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan.

Tajikistan was represented by Ambassador Abdujabbor Rahmonzoda, The Caspian Post reports via Tajik media.

The participants highlighted the importance of establishing a Contact Group at the level of special representatives on Afghan issues, describing it as a timely and independent regional platform for regular and focused dialogue on shared interests.

Officials stressed the need for a regional approach to the Afghan situation, considering Central Asia’s geostrategic position, historical cultural and economic ties with Afghanistan, and the shared goal of stability and security across Eurasia.

The delegates confirmed their commitment to developing common, balanced, and realistic strategies on Afghanistan, including the restoration and expansion of trade, transport, logistics, and cultural-humanitarian links between Central Asia and Afghanistan.

The meeting also covered engagement with the current de facto authorities in Afghanistan, balancing national interests and regional priorities, and enhancing cooperation on security matters, including efforts to combat cross-border crime, extremism, terrorism, and drug trafficking.

Recognizing Afghanistan’s role in regional sustainable development, participants underscored the importance of the Contact Group as a platform for consultation, coordination, and dialogue, agreeing to hold regular sessions in this format.

The continued work of the Contact Group will reinforce the independent and responsible role of Central Asian states in shaping the regional agenda on Afghanistan and support sustainable development across the macro-region.
