Uzbekistan’s Uzbekneftegaz national oil and gas company has announced plans to fully halt the production of Ai-80 automotive gasoline by September 2025, in line with the country’s broader efforts to modernize its fuel standards and reduce environmental impact.
The company intends to exhaust its current Ai-80 stockpiles by the end of 2025 and transition entirely to higher-octane fuel offerings starting in 2026, The Caspian Post reports, citing Turkmen media.
This move will bring Uzbekistan more in line with international fuel quality standards.
The country’s Ministry of Energy initially announced the gradual phase-out of Ai-80 gasoline in early 2024, citing concerns over outdated fuel quality and environmental performance. Officials also highlighted that Ai-80 is already banned or discontinued in many countries, including Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, both of which rely heavily on imported petroleum products.
Uzbekneftegaz’s decision reflects a growing shift toward cleaner and more efficient energy use in Central Asia. The government has pledged to remove regulatory and infrastructural obstacles to support the nationwide shift to modern fuel grades in the coming years.
