Georgia has announced a comprehensive three-year strategy to double the capacity of its railway network and enhance passenger services, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze revealed on Wednesday.
According to Kobakhidze, the plan includes acquiring 50 new locomotives and 1,500 wagons, which could raise annual passenger traffic from 2 million to 5 million, The Caspian Post reports, citing Xinhua.
"We will purchase 10 new passenger trains," he stated. "This will make travel much more comfortable and faster for both residents and visitors."
Significant improvements feature a new direct rail connection between the capital, Tbilisi, and Kutaisi. The Tbilisi-Batumi line, linking the capital to the Black Sea port city, is scheduled for completion in August, reducing travel time from five and a half hours to four.
Additionally, the Tbilisi-Akhaltsikhe route, which was suspended in 2009, will reopen with a shortened journey time of three hours. The historic Borjomi-Bakuriani line is also set to undergo renovation as part of the upgrades.
