Passenger train services between Iran's Tehran and Mashhad cities have been suspended following an overnight US strike that damaged railway infrastructure.
The disruption comes ahead of a planned burial ceremony for Iran's former Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which is scheduled to take place on July 9 in his hometown of Mashhad, The Caspian Post reports via Iran's Tasnim news agency.
Repair crews were dispatched immediately to restore the damaged rail line. Iranian authorities have also introduced an alternative travel plan, transporting passengers by road around the affected section before reconnecting them with rail services.
The railway disruption followed renewed military exchanges between the United States and Iran. The report also stated that Washington and Tehran had previously signed a memorandum of understanding calling for an immediate halt to hostilities but that both sides exchanged fresh strikes on July 8.
Iranian authorities have arranged alternative transport for travelers while repair work on the railway continues.
