Kazakhstan Looks to Boost Gas Cooperation With Azerbaijan

Deputy Director General for Production at KMG-Karachaganak Andrey Kan has said that Kazakhstan is looking to deepen its partnership with Azerbaijan in the gas sector.

Kan made these remarks on the sidelines of the SPE 2025 Caspian Technical Conference in Baku, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.

He praised the strong collaboration between the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) and KazMunayGas, noting that SOCAR has shown interest in new exploration projects in Kazakhstan.

“We see strong prospects in gas production and gas chemistry,” he said, adding that closer cooperation between the two countries would strengthen their positions in the global energy market.

The two nations have already boosted ties in recent years. In 2022, KazMunayGas and SOCAR signed an agreement on the transit of Kazakh oil, followed by a 2024 deal to gradually increase transit volumes through Azerbaijan.

KazMunayGas, Kazakhstan’s national oil and gas company, oversees exploration, extraction, refining, and transport operations through a network of more than 190 subsidiaries. It is 90 per cent owned by the Samruk-Kazyna National Wealth Fund and 10 per cent by the National Bank of Kazakhstan.

Meanwhile, Kazakhstan continues its domestic energy expansion, with Zhetysu recently launching a major gas pipeline supplying 84 villages.
