Kazakh Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov has stated that Kazakhstan will not implement retaliatory tariffs on American imports, even as the US prepares to introduce a 25 per cent tariff on Kazakh goods starting August 1, 2025.
Speaking at a press conference in Astana, Bektenov emphasized that the impact of the proposed US tariffs on Kazakhstan's economy would be minimal, The Caspian Post reports, citing local media.
“Ninety-five percent of our exports to the US are not affected by the tariffs announced by President Donald Trump. The remaining 5 per cent do not carry substantial economic significance,” Bektenov said.
He also noted that negotiations are ongoing with American counterparts.
The US administration’s decision to impose duties prompted a diplomatic response from Kazakhstan. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev addressed a letter to President Trump, reaffirming his country's commitment to constructive dialogue and expressing confidence in reaching a mutually beneficial resolution to the trade issue.
Despite the potential for tension, Kazakhstan’s decision signals a preference for diplomacy and economic pragmatism over confrontation.
