Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia Explore Direct Bishkek–Kuala Lumpur Flights to Boost Ties

Kyrgyzstan’s Parliament Speaker Nurlanbek Turgunbek uulu has met with Malaysian Senate Deputy President Nur Jazlan Mohamed to discuss strengthening bilateral ties, including the potential launch of a direct flight between Bishkek and Kuala Lumpur.

The leaders explored opportunities to enhance political, economic, cultural, and humanitarian cooperation, as well as inter-parliamentary collaboration, The Caspian Post informs via Kyrgyz media.

Speaker Turgunbek uulu emphasized that a direct air link would boost tourism, increase visitor flows, and strengthen trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.

“Despite wide opportunities, trade relations have not yet reached their full potential. We need to intensify efforts and develop joint work in tourism. A direct Bishkek-Kuala Lumpur flight would support both tourism and economic growth,” he said, also highlighting Kyrgyzstan’s significant hydropower potential and inviting Malaysian investors to engage in the sector.

Deputy Senate President Nur Jazlan Mohamed, visiting Kyrgyzstan for the second time, praised the country’s development, particularly in Bishkek, and supported expanding educational cooperation. He noted Malaysian students’ interest in studying medicine in Kyrgyzstan and proposed Kyrgyz students pursue studies in technology, communications, and business in Malaysia. He also expressed willingness to share Malaysia’s experience in accessing global markets.

The meeting concluded with Nur Jazlan Mohamed inviting Speaker Turgunbek uulu for an official visit to Malaysia.

Talks on establishing direct flights have been underway since May 2024, when President Sadyr Japarov announced Kyrgyzstan’s readiness to grant Malaysian airlines the fifth freedom of the air, enabling Kyrgyz airports to serve as transit points for European flights.
