Head of the Department for Implementing Food Security Decisions at the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry Abdulaziz Azhymametov has said that the prices of several essential food items in Kyrgyzstan are on the decline.
In a recent press briefing, Azhymametov reported that the cost of a number of socially important products has decreased, even as meat prices continue rising compared to last year, The Caspian Post reports via Kyrgyz media.
“Prices for staples like sugar and rice have gone down,” he noted. “For example, sugar that sold for 82 soms [$0.94] per kilogram in January now costs between 72 and 75 soms [$0.82-0.86].”
The decline in prices is largely due to increased domestic agricultural output, Azhymametov explained, which has helped reduce production and processing costs for local suppliers.
He also pointed to broader government efforts to enhance food security and promote agricultural self-sufficiency. Under a presidential decree, at least 50 per cent of all agricultural products produced in Kyrgyzstan must be processed domestically by 2040-a target aimed at strengthening the country’s agri-food sector and reducing reliance on imports.
The ministry continues monitoring food prices and production trends as part of its national food security strategy, with further measures expected to support both consumers and producers in the coming years.
