Couples across Russia are increasingly opting for modest celebrations instead of lavish weddings, citing skyrocketing prices as the main reason.
The new trend of 2026, dubbed “small weddings for close friends and family,” is reshaping the wedding industry, The Caspian Post reports via Russian media.
Why Big Weddings Are Fading
Just a few years ago, the average cost of food was 5,000-7,000 rubles per person. Today, it’s risen to 8,000-10,000 rubles, with nearly every wedding expense doubling or more. Decorations have seen the most dramatic spike - costs have surged 650% over four years.
How Couples Are Coping
To celebrate without breaking the bank, couples are:
Choosing minimalist venues
Handling tasks themselves, from guest seating to do-it-yourself (DIY) decorations
Cutting unnecessary extras to save money
Wedding planners have also raised their fees, sometimes up to 15%, leading some vendors and hosts to protest or adjust their own commissions. Despite these measures, organizers say it’s nearly impossible to cover costs solely with guest gifts.
