A new chapter in tourism development is unfolding at Lake Iskanderkul, one of Tajikistan’s most iconic natural landmarks, as construction of a modern tourism complex has officially begun.
The project, supported by local entrepreneurs, was launched during a groundbreaking ceremony attended by Sughd Governor Rajab Ahmadzoda, The Caspian Post reports via Tajik media.
Officials say the initiative is aimed at boosting tourism infrastructure and improving the quality of services for both domestic and international visitors.
The complex will be built in the Fondaryo Jamoat area on a 1.08-hectare site. Plans include three three-story buildings and five one-story structures, along with parking facilities, a sports ground, restaurant and café, walking paths, a children’s playground, and other visitor amenities.
Nestled at an altitude of 2,195 meters on the northern slopes of the Hisor Range in the Fann Mountains, Iskanderkul is a glacial mountain lake covering 3.4 square kilometers and reaching depths of up to 72 meters. The triangular-shaped lake was formed by a landslide that blocked the Saratogh River. Its outflow, the Iskander Darya, joins the Yaghnob River to form the Fon Daryo, a major left tributary of the Zarafshon River.
Located about 134 kilometers from Dushanbe and just 23 kilometers from the Dushanbe-Khujand highway, Iskanderkul remains one of Tajikistan’s most popular tourist destinations. Renowned for its dramatic alpine scenery, the lake attracts visitors from near and far each year and serves as a favored leisure spot for local residents.
Scientists note that the lake’s water level was significantly higher in ancient times, with marks on surrounding mountainsides indicating levels more than 120 meters above the current surface.
The lake’s name is linked to Alexander the Great, known as Iskander in Persian. Local legends say the site is either where Alexander punished rebellious inhabitants by diverting a river, or where his famed warhorse Bucephalus met its end-stories that add to the enduring mystique of this picturesque mountain lake.
