Tajik Siblings Grab Gold and Bronze at Grappling World Cup in Uzbekistan

Young Tajik athletes Maryam and Shokhrukh Temuri, pupils of School No. 14 in Dushanbe, have delivered remarkable performances at the AIGA Grappling World Cup 2025, held in Uzbekistan’s Tashkent city.

The international tournament gathered more than 1,000 competitors from across the world, The Caspian Post reports via Tajik media.

Representing Tajikistan’s national team, the siblings impressed spectators and coaches alike, according to their Arkoni sports club.

Second-grader Maryam Temuri, competing in the under-34 kg category, advanced through the competition with confidence, defeating rivals from Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan to claim gold. Her victory marked a historic milestone, as she became the first Tajik grappler ever to win a World Cup title.

Her brother, third-grader Shokhrukh Temuri, also competed in the same weight division. He stunned the audience by defeating a five-time world champion in his opening bout and went on to reach the semifinals, where he narrowly lost to a Kazakh athlete by two points. Shokhrukh ultimately secured the bronze medal.

The event drew participants from CIS countries, China, Türkiye, Brazil, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Poland, Korea, and Kazakhstan, underscoring its global scale and competitiveness.
