Tajikistan’s President Pushes for Regional Energy Market at ECO Summit

Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon has voiced strong support for the creation of a regional energy market during the 17th Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Summit held in Azerbaijan’s Khankendi.

President Rahmon highlighted the importance of projects aimed at integrating the energy systems of ECO member states, The Caspian Post reports via local media.

He pointed to the CASA-1000 power transmission line as a key initiative that holds significant promise for the region.

The president also announced the recent completion of an important milestone: the commissioning of the 500 kV Datka-Sughd transmission line connecting Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, which strengthens regional power connectivity.

“At the same time, we are interested in establishing a regional energy market within the ECO framework,” Rahmon said. “Developing a strategy for the region’s energy sustainability is highly relevant. The implementation of such projects will increase production and export of green energy and promote the broader transition to a green economy.”

The 17th Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Summit is currently taking place in Khankendi, gathering leaders and officials from member countries to explore ways to strengthen regional collaboration.

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev attended the summit.

Also present at the event are the presidents and prime ministers of Tajikistan (Emomali Rahmon), Türkiye (Recep Tayyip Erdoğan), Iran (Masoud Pezeshkian), Uzbekistan (Shavkat Mirziyoyev), Pakistan (Shehbaz Sharif), as well as the leader of Northern Cyprus, Ersin Tatar.
