Uzbekistan and China have taken a new step toward strengthening cooperation in nuclear and radiation safety, as a high-level Uzbek delegation visited Beijing for talks with Chinese counterparts.
The delegation, led by Abduvakkos Rafikov, Chairman of Uzbekistan’s Committee for Industrial, Radiation and Nuclear Safety, met with Dong Baotong, head of China’s National Nuclear Safety Administration, The Caspian Post reports via Uzbek media.
The discussions focused on long-term collaboration in regulating industrial, radiation, and nuclear safety.
Following the talks, the sides signed an interagency memorandum of understanding aimed at deepening cooperation in radiation and nuclear safety regulation. The agreement lays out a roadmap to improve state oversight, enhance regulatory infrastructure for nuclear energy, and strengthen legal and institutional frameworks.
The memorandum also prioritizes expanding human resource capacity and ensuring compliance with international radiation and nuclear safety standards-an important milestone for bilateral cooperation and regional energy security.
The talks come amid growing global interest in nuclear power as a clean energy source. Notably, South Korea has confirmed plans to build two new nuclear reactors by 2038, reflecting strong public support and rising demand for low-carbon energy solutions.
