Uzbekistan Joins FAO Council, Marking Milestone in Global Agricultural Leadership

The Republic of Uzbekistan has been unanimously elected to the Council of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for the 2028-2029 term, marking a historic first for the country.

The decision was made during the most recent session of the FAO Council held in Rome, The Caspian Post reports, citing the Uzbek Foreign Ministry.

The FAO Council, composed of 49 elected member states, serves as one of the organization’s main governing bodies. Members are selected for terms of up to three years on the basis of geographical representation. The Council plays a critical role in approving FAO’s budget and program of work, as well as formulating policy recommendations for the FAO Conference.

Uzbekistan’s election to the Council is seen as a reflection of the international community’s recognition of the country’s ongoing reforms in agriculture, food security, and agrarian innovation, implemented under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

The foreign ministry emphasized that Uzbekistan’s new role will offer significant opportunities to influence global agricultural policy, contribute to the development of international standards, support national and regional development initiatives, attract investment, and promote joint projects aimed at strengthening sustainable food systems.
