Uzbekistan has been chosen to host the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in 2028, marking the first time this world-renowned space forum will be held in Central Asia.
The selection of Samarkand as the venue follows a competitive bidding process where Uzbekistan emerged victorious over contenders including India and Bahrain. Experts see this as a testament to the country’s rapid advancements and reforms in its space sector, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.
“In recent years, Uzbekistan has implemented several strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening its space exploration capabilities. These efforts include developing a robust legislative framework, expanding space infrastructure, and fostering international partnerships. The Space Industry Development Concept for 2022-2026 plays a critical role in guiding these developments,” said Mukhiddin Ibragimov, Deputy Director of the Space Research and Technology Agency.
The IAC is expected to draw over 10,000 participants from across the globe, featuring a major exhibition highlighting the latest breakthroughs in space technology and research.
Uzbekistan’s growing reputation in the international arena was further solidified when it received a gold medal at the World Expo in Osaka for its innovative theme development.
Hosting the IAC not only places Uzbekistan at the forefront of global space dialogue but also signals the nation’s commitment to becoming a key player in the space industry.
