Russian Ambassador to Pakistan Albert Khorev has warned that rising tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan are disrupting trade routes and delaying major infrastructure and energy projects across South and Central Asia.
Speaking during a podcast interview, Khorev said strained relations between the two neighboring countries are negatively affecting trade flows involving Pakistan, Central Asia and Russia, with Pakistan’s pharmaceutical sector among the hardest hit, The Caspian Post reports via Ariana News.
The envoy noted that several strategic regional projects have stalled, including the long-discussed Trans-Afghan railway. He added that uncertainty also continues to surround major energy initiatives such as CASA-1000 and the TAPI gas pipeline project.
Khorev said Russia is prepared to mediate between Afghanistan and Pakistan if both sides seek Moscow’s involvement, stressing Russia’s support for regional peace and reconciliation efforts.
The ambassador also argued that Afghanistan’s current authorities have demonstrated resilience despite international sanctions, frozen state assets and strict banking restrictions. He said that the Afghan government continues to maintain working relations with regional and global partners even without formal international recognition.
Khorev further suggested that other countries could follow Russia in developing pragmatic ties with Afghanistan, while calling on Western nations to release frozen Afghan assets. He said such a move could strengthen counterterrorism efforts and help address refugee-related challenges.
On education, the Russian envoy stressed that fundamental human rights - including girls’ access to education - must be respected to ensure Afghanistan’s long-term development and stability.
