UNESCO Declares December 15 as World Turkic Language Family Day

UNESCO has officially proclaimed December 15 as World Turkic Language Family Day, marking a major milestone for the Turkic world.

The decision was adopted during the 43rd UNESCO General Conference held in Samarkand, The Caspian Post reports via Kyrgyz media.

Kubanychbek Omuraliev, Secretary General of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS), welcomed the announcement, calling it a “historic recognition of the ancient roots and universal values of the Turkic language family.”

He noted that the inclusion of the date in the UNESCO international calendar highlights the growing global acknowledgment of the Turkic world’s cultural heritage and identity.

“We extend sincere congratulations to all Member States and Observers for their contributions to this meaningful initiative,” Omuraliev said, adding that the OTS will continue promoting shared historical and cultural values among Turkic nations.

With this decision, Turkic languages join the ranks of other world languages that have dedicated UNESCO days, such as Arabic (December 18) and Russian (June 6).

The new commemorative day will pave the way for annual festivals, conferences, and educational programs under UNESCO’s auspices - aimed at preserving, promoting, and developing Turkic languages, while strengthening the unity and cultural identity of Turkic-speaking peoples.
