Georgia Expands Protected Lands With New Egrisi National Park

Georgia is set to create a new protected area with the launch of Egrisi National Park, expanding the country’s growing network of natural reserves and eco-tourism destinations.

A draft law has already been submitted to parliament that would grant protected status to a 37,074-hectare area covering parts of the municipalities of Tsalenjikha, Chkhorotsku, and Martvili. The law is expected to take effect in 2027, The Caspian Post reports via Georgian media.

Authorities plan to establish a dedicated administration for the new park with up to 22 staff members, supported by the necessary infrastructure and equipment. Funding for the project is expected to come from the state budget.

Georgia currently has 94 protected territories, including 15 national parks, covering around 13.3% of the country’s land area. These natural sites attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, making them a key part of Georgia’s tourism appeal.
