Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has called for the creation of an International Water Organization under the UN, emphasizing that global water diplomacy requires close interstate coordination.
Speaking at the Forum marking the International Year of Peace and Trust, the International Day of Neutrality, and Turkmenistan’s 30th anniversary of permanent neutrality, Tokayev noted that no UN body is currently dedicated exclusively to water issues, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.
Kazakhstan proposes transforming the UN-Water mechanism into a specialized agency to consolidate mandates, align with UN Sustainable Development Goals, and better address water challenges worldwide.
Tokayev announced that in April 2026, Astana will host a Regional Environmental Summit to launch international consultations on the proposal. He stressed that collective political will can tackle water issues systematically, while the Ashgabat Forum helps strengthen regional partnerships and promote a fair world order.
Earlier, the Kazakh president also highlighted the urgent need to protect the Aral and Caspian Seas.
