Kazakhstan Launches Digital Drive to Transform Water Management

The Kazakh Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation is developing a national water assessment information system aimed at improving the country’s management of water resources.

The platform will integrate data on surface and underground water, hydraulic structures, and other water facilities, The Caspian Post reports, citing Kazakh media.

In the future, it is expected to use artificial intelligence and satellite monitoring to calculate Kazakhstan’s water balance, determine the actual needs of the population and economy, and track water usage.

According to the ministry, the system will create a unified digital platform for managing both surface and groundwater resources. It is expected to enhance transparency, improve efficiency in water use, and strengthen the country’s capacity to address shortages and emergency situations through more accurate forecasting and analysis.

The project, funded by the Eurasian Development Bank (EDB), is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026. Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Nurzhan Nurzhigitov has instructed subordinate agencies to ensure the accuracy and relevance of all data included in the system.
