Kazakhstan Launches Largest-Ever Vessel into Caspian Sea

Kazakhstan has launched its largest domestically built vessel into the Caspian Sea, marking a major milestone for the country’s naval and industrial capabilities.

The ceremony took place in Uralsk at the Zenit shipbuilding plant, timed to coincide with Defender of the Fatherland Day. Among those attending was West Kazakhstan Region Governor Nariman Turegaliyev, who praised the workforce behind the project and highlighted its strategic importance, The Caspian Post reports via Kazinform.

The new vessel - the biggest ever produced in Kazakhstan - has been named after prominent statesman Dinmukhamed Kunaev. Officials say the launch reflects the country’s broader push to strengthen defense capabilities under the direction of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

Built at the Zenit Plant, the ship is the 37th vessel produced by the facility. It boasts a displacement of 720 tons and is designed for multifunctional support missions.

Plant director Vitaliy Kaplunov said that the vessel can reach speeds of up to 16 knots. Measuring 51 meters in length and 9.5 meters in width, it is engineered to withstand storms of up to force 8 - making it well-suited for the challenging conditions of the Caspian Sea.

The ship’s primary role will be logistical support for Kazakhstan’s naval forces, supplying fuel, water, food, and other essentials. It will accommodate a crew of around 30, with onboard conditions designed for extended missions at sea.

Before entering full service, the vessel will undergo final preparations. Its mast will be installed later at the Aktau port, allowing it to pass under a bridge en route to open waters.
