More than 100 people were detained in Ankara after police dispersed an anti-NATO demonstration organized by the Communist Party of Türkiye (TKP) ahead of the alliance's upcoming summit.
Protesters gathered in Kızılay Square carrying banners and chanting slogans against NATO's presence in Türkiye. Police used tear gas to break up the demonstration before carrying out mass detentions, The Caspian Post reports via T24.
The TKP said several of its senior party officials were among those taken into custody during the operation.
Security measures have been significantly tightened across the Turkish capital ahead of the NATO Summit, scheduled for July 7-8 in Ankara. Authorities have imposed restrictions on public gatherings and partially closed several roads as preparations for the high-profile meeting continue.
