Uzbekistan Busts Illegal Travel Agency Over Umrah Trips

In Uzbekistan, law enforcement officers have uncovered the operations of an illegal travel agency, Jalolquduq Aviatrans, which organized unauthorized Umrah trips for 19,500 people.

Investigations revealed that the organizers collected $22.8 million from pilgrims, The Caspian Post reports via Uzbek media.

The taxes and mandatory payments exceeding 15.3 billion soms ($1.2 million) were evaded, with total damages to the state estimated at 1.8 billion soms ($150,400).

Due to inadequate living conditions in Saudi Arabia, 534 Uzbek citizens faced serious difficulties and had to be returned home via special flights.

A criminal case has been launched against the company. Thirteen people have been detained, and one more has been held accountable in connection with the case.

Authorities continue investigating and ensuring accountability, warning citizens to use only licensed travel agencies for religious pilgrimages.
