Authorities in two regions of Uzbekistan have uncovered cases of scams involving Umrah pilgrimage tours.
In one case, suspects gained a citizen’s trust by promising to arrange visas for travel to Saudi Arabia for four pilgrims for $4,900. They were arrested after receiving an advance payment of $2,500, The Caspian Post reports via Uzbek media.
A similar case occurred in Guzar district, Kashkadarya region, where law enforcement detained a private travel agent who promised to send a woman’s mother-in-law on pilgrimage for 12.2 million soums ($996.41), apprehending him after receiving 10 million soums ($816.73).
Criminal cases have been opened under Article 168 (Fraud) and Articles 28 and 211 (Bribery), and investigations are ongoing.
