Kazakhstan, Belgium Eye Deeper Economic and Strategic Partnership

On the margins of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has met with Prime Minister of Belgium Bart De Wever to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation and explore new areas of strategic engagement.

President Tokayev reaffirmed Kazakhstan’s commitment to expanding its long-term partnership with Belgium, describing the country as a key ally within the European Union, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.

He underscored the importance of advancing economic and political dialogue, especially in light of growing geopolitical and economic challenges.

Highlighting the depth of economic relations, President Tokayev noted that Belgium remains one of Kazakhstan’s top ten foreign investors, with bilateral trade reaching nearly $500 million in 2024. Both sides recognized the significant potential for further cooperation in critical raw materials, petrochemicals, agriculture, industry, transport and logistics, artificial intelligence, finance, tourism, and education.

Prime Minister De Wever expressed gratitude for the opportunity to discuss the evolving bilateral agenda and conveyed greetings from King Philippe of Belgium. He welcomed Kazakhstan’s interest in closer engagement and emphasized Belgium’s readiness to support new joint initiatives across priority sectors.

The meeting reflects Kazakhstan’s broader diplomatic efforts to deepen ties with leading EU nations. Earlier during the UNGA session, President Tokayev also held talks with French President Emmanuel Macron, reaffirming his country's commitment to multilateralism and strategic cooperation with European partners.
