The start of 2026 has brought encouraging news for residents of remote rural areas in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, Uzbekistan, as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) steps up support for household farming with modern agricultural machinery.
As part of efforts to boost farm productivity and incomes, FAO has delivered new equipment designed to make land preparation faster and more efficient, The Caspian Post reports via Uzbek media.
Five two-wheel tractors were handed over to households in the Yesim mahalla of the Qorao‘zak district, giving local farmers the tools they need to better manage their household plots, speed up planting and improve overall labor productivity.
The assistance is being provided under the Food Systems Land Use and Restoration Impact Program in Uzbekistan (FOLUR-Uzbekistan). The program is financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by FAO in partnership with Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Agriculture and the National Committee on Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change.
Two-wheel tractors play a vital role in small-scale farming, significantly easing ploughing, cultivation, furrow formation and other land preparation tasks. Their use reduces physical strain on rural communities while helping to increase agricultural output.
“By providing agricultural machinery, we aim to ensure sustainable growth in rural incomes, expand food self-sufficiency and strengthen resilience to climate change,” said Aziz Nurbekov, National Coordinator of the FOLUR-Uzbekistan project.
In Karakalpakstan, the initiative also places strong emphasis on preventing ecosystem degradation, promoting efficient land and water use, and encouraging soil-protective, resource-efficient farming practices that support long-term environmental sustainability.
